How to Export Better Photos for Facebook From DxO PhotoLab

Uploading your best images to Facebook can be frustrating. You spend time editing the color, detail, contrast, and sharpness, then upload the finished photo only to find that Facebook has changed the way it looks.

The truth is that Facebook applies its own compression and processing to photos after upload. You cannot completely stop that from happening. What you can do is give Facebook a strong, clean file to work from in the first place.

In this article, I am sharing what I found while testing JPEG exports from DxO PhotoLab. I compared low-quality and high-quality JPEG files, tested exports with and without resizing options selected, and looked closely at what happened to the detail in the images.

The simple goal is this: export a high-quality JPEG, avoid reducing the pixel size more than necessary, and let Facebook start with the best version of your photo.

Facebook Will Still Compress Your Photos

No matter how carefully you export your image, Facebook will process it after you upload it.

That means Facebook may reduce file size, create different versions for phones and computers, and apply its own compression to make images load quickly across the platform. Fine detail in car paint, wheels, trees, leaves, water, grass, hair, fur, clouds, shadows, and textures can be affected by that processing.

Because Facebook applies compression anyway, some photographers try exporting extremely small files or very low-quality JPEGs to “match” Facebook’s compression. Based on my testing, that is not the best approach.

If you begin with a weak or heavily compressed JPEG, Facebook has less image information to work with. Then Facebook compresses that already-compressed image again. This can make blockiness, patchy areas, smearing, and loss of fine detail more obvious.

Instead, start with a stronger file.

My JPEG Quality Test

I tested the same image exported at two different JPEG quality settings:

  • A JPEG exported at 10% quality

  • A JPEG exported at 100% quality

At normal viewing size, the 10% file did not look as bad as someone might expect. If you are only looking at the entire image on a phone or scrolling quickly through Facebook, it can appear usable.

However, when you zoom in and inspect detailed areas, the differences become easier to see.

The low-quality JPEG can show patchy textures, reduced fine detail, and compression artifacts. These issues are especially noticeable in areas with complex textures or subtle transitions, such as foliage, shadows, skies, reflections, automotive paint, and small details in the background.

The 100% JPEG holds significantly more detail before it is uploaded to Facebook. Facebook may still compress it, but it is starting with a cleaner, more detailed source image.

The tradeoff is file size. A 100% JPEG takes up more storage space on your computer or external drive than a 10% JPEG. For me, that tradeoff is worth it when I want my photos to look their best online.

JPEG Quality and Image Size Are Different

One of the biggest sources of confusion is mixing up JPEG quality with image dimensions.

JPEG quality controls how much compression is applied when the image is exported. Lower quality settings create smaller files by throwing away more visual data. Higher settings preserve more detail but create larger files.

Image dimensions refer to the actual number of pixels in the photo.

For example, an image might be:

  • 6,000 × 4,000 pixels

  • 2,048 × 1,365 pixels

  • 1,200 × 800 pixels

For Facebook, pixel dimensions matter much more than a setting such as 72 PPI, 96 PPI, or 300 PPI.

PPI, or pixels per inch, is mostly relevant for printing. It tells a printer how densely to place pixels on paper at a certain physical print size. It does not add or remove detail from the digital image by itself.

A photo that is 6,000 × 4,000 pixels at 72 PPI contains the same number of pixels as that same photo labeled 300 PPI. If the pixel dimensions do not change, the Facebook upload should not gain or lose detail simply because the PPI number changed.

The real problem happens when an export setting reduces the image’s actual pixel dimensions.

Be Careful With Resize Settings

When exporting from DxO PhotoLab—or any photo-editing software—it is important to look closely at the resize options.

A print-based export preset can reduce an image to a smaller pixel size. For example, selecting an export designed around a 4-by-6-inch print may result in a file with fewer pixels than your original image, depending on the PPI setting used.

If you export a smaller image and then upload it to Facebook, Facebook has less detail to preserve. Its own compression can make the limitations of that smaller file easier to notice.

In my testing, images exported without restrictive resizing looked better than versions exported with settings that reduced the image dimensions. The difference was especially visible when viewing small details closely.

That does not mean that every resize option is bad. It simply means you should resize intentionally.

If you want to upload to Facebook, do not use a small print-size preset unless you have confirmed the final pixel dimensions are still large enough for online display.

Recommended Facebook Export Settings

Here is a practical starting point for exporting photos to Facebook from DxO PhotoLab.

  • Export as a JPEG

  • Use a JPEG quality setting around 90 to 100

  • Use the sRGB color space for predictable online color

  • Keep the image at a healthy pixel size

  • Use roughly 2,048 pixels on the long edge as a practical social-media export size

  • Avoid unnecessarily small image dimensions

  • Do not worry too much about the PPI or DPI setting unless you are exporting specifically for print

  • Apply sharpening carefully, because aggressive sharpening can look worse after Facebook compression

For square images, 2,048 × 2,048 pixels is a useful target.

For horizontal landscape photos, exporting with the long edge around 2,048 pixels is a good balance between image quality, upload speed, and file size.

For vertical images, preserve the intended aspect ratio and avoid exporting an extremely small file. Facebook may crop or display vertical content differently depending on where the image is viewed, so make sure the main subject is not too close to the edge of the frame.

What About HEIC Images From an iPhone?

Photos captured on an iPhone may begin as HEIC files rather than JPEGs. HEIC is a more efficient image format, but it can be handled differently by apps, editing software, and social-media platforms.

When an HEIC image is shared or uploaded, the phone, app, or platform may convert it to JPEG. That conversion can involve differences in color handling, HDR processing, tone mapping, embedded color profiles, file dimensions, or compression.

So if an iPhone photo looks different after uploading, it may not be only because of a resolution setting. It can also be caused by the conversion from HEIC to JPEG and the way Facebook processes the uploaded file.

The best approach is still to review the final export before uploading. If possible, export the edited version yourself as a high-quality JPEG in sRGB, rather than relying on an unknown automatic conversion during sharing.

Give Facebook the Best Starting File

The key takeaway is simple: Facebook controls what happens after you upload the photo, but you control the quality of the file you give it.

Start with a carefully edited image. Export it as a high-quality JPEG. Keep enough pixels for Facebook to work with. Avoid shrinking the file through a print-size or resize setting unless that is what you intentionally want.

A low-quality JPEG may look acceptable at first glance, especially on a phone screen. But once you inspect the image more closely—or once Facebook recompresses it—the loss of detail can become much more visible.

For automotive photography, landscape images, nature scenes, event photos, and any image with fine details, starting with a clean high-quality export is one of the easiest ways to improve the appearance of your Facebook uploads.

Facebook will still apply its own compression, but you will be giving your work the best chance to look sharp, clean, and professional.

Final Thoughts

You do not need a complicated export workflow to get better Facebook photos.

Export a strong JPEG. Keep the quality high. Watch the actual pixel dimensions. Use sRGB. Do not confuse PPI with image size. And avoid sending Facebook a file that has already been heavily compressed or reduced.

That is the workflow I use after testing different export settings in DxO PhotoLab, and it is a simple way to protect as much image detail as possible before your photo goes online.
